For centuries, the
entire world has taken downturns by economic crises for several times. It appears that some countries had higher loss
than others and were nearly going bankrupt, causing a feeling of frustration
among their people about the economic problem and a rising unemployment rate.
In response to that situation, millions of people decided to rise up and
started protests, causing chaos and many loss. Why did only one country have so
many crises? Why didn’t they see them coming? What is the cause of their problem?
I believe that most of people probably think that it’s because of its
government’s failure. Well, that is
pretty true, if you didn’t look deeper and further at the dynamic of the
problem. Actually, the main reason of this problem is a lack of discipline
of the people in the nation which reflects to their leader.
Unlike some other countries in
Asia whom suffer from natural disasters, low natural abundance and low quality
of life. Thailand is rich in natural resources and has the unique culture and
cuisine. For these factors, our country has made a lot of progress for many
years. Nevertheless, Thailand is considered to be just a developing country,
not a developed one. Due to several psychological researches, one of the
hindrances of Thailand progress is a lack of discipline which can lead
the nation to disaster. This issue causes the growing of an incidence of
violent crime, divorce, prostitution, drug abuse, poverty, corruption and many other
problems on national level. Under these conditions, Thailand
will sooner or later collapse.
We can’t deny the fact that we have been living
too comfortable for far too long. In the past, our country had small populations;
in 1910 about 8 million people. Thereby we had individual
freedom to live as we please. We‘re always be able to preserve our unity. We also
had plenty of natural resources and never short of food. That’s why we did not have to battle or compete with anyone. Now
we are in the twenty-first century. As a result of rapid population growth and
technology, Thai society has already modernized from the influence of globalization. That means we can no
longer behave or think within our conventional framework, because when a group
of people are living in the same society, discipline is a basic requirement,
but we still lack of it. People create more and more troubles and confusions in
public places by their undisciplined behaviors, such as jumping the queue,
avoiding taxes, traffic infractions, littering and unpunctuality in school and workplace.
These characteristics are hardly found in a civilized and developed society.
‘Land of smile’ has become the icon of Thailand
since forever. Someone might have made it up in order to describe Thailand by
our people’s characteristic. In that case, ‘land of self-indulgence’ will be
more perfect fit. Thai people like to do things that satisfy only self and have
little concern for other people. We, Thai don’t like to cooperate. That’s why
we have little success in team sports like football. It’s so obvious, isn’t it? A lack of discipline is the main reason for
the failures we experience. If we still let this kind of attitude remaining in
our society, it will deeply root into our mind and thought, passing through the
next generation and before we know, we will never be able to get rid of it. In
the future if we want our nation to transform into a developed nation and
capable of strengthen long-term quality growth and lasting prosperity, we have
to change our conventional thought, value, behavior and attitude to suited for
the age of globalization.
Self-discipline is the most important thing
that Thai people should concentrate on. Although it’s not a thing which can be
created in a blink of time, it can be inculcated requiring some effort and time.
The inculcating should start from a very young age, because it’s the perfect
time to plant a seed of self-discipline and it’ll be rooting deeply and growing
inside their mind during their growing up process. There
should be a co-operation from the whole society. Every institutions and
organizations should take this issue seriously. Especially family, parents are
a child's first teachers and role models. They learn how to behave by seeing
how their parents behave and by following their example. Children who are
growing in disciplined, quality and happy environment will become responsible
adults. Without discipline, our social life will become a mess and will soon go
out of control.
Not just social life, discipline is essential
for political life too. For almost 10 years, we have been experienced a very
disturbing phenomenon of political strikes, demonstrations and protests. This
shows the result of undisciplined among our people. Members of political
parties should always act in a disciplined manner. If a leader him/herself lacks
disciplined, he/she cannot becoming a great leader and won’t get any approval
from people. Besides, discipline and democracy go hand in hand. If a democracy
lacks discipline, it can be replaced by a dictatorship government sooner or
later.
Disciplined people should be praised and
rewarded for their virtue.
People who feel appreciated and respected are more motivated than those
who think their efforts go unnoticed. In the other hand, any undisciplined acts
or any selfish acts which cause troubles to public should be roundly condemned
by society. And for those who disobey the law should deserve a proper and fair
punishment. This will encourage our people to behave ourselves in the right
manner.
Thus, discipline is important for individual
growth and national prosperity. Discipline is very necessary for the nation to
develop. It is an ability of self-controlling and obedience. It enables us to
reject an instant gratification to behave ourselves in a proper way with moral
and value; to avoid doing things which causes trouble to ourselves and others
or things which are not accepted by the society. Moreover, it also gives us the inner strength
to overcome obstacles
in our life in order to achieve our goal.
